June 2019 Consistory Digest

NOTE: Meeting schedule change for July and August (page 3)

There were 14 members present including Pastor Whittier.

Treasurer’s Report:

General pledge for May 2019:  $10,996.55  (4 Sundays)

General pledge for May 2018:  $10,834.00  (4 Sundays)

YTD 2019 income:  $81,385.49

YTD 2019 expenses:  $102,243.47

YTD shortage:  $20,857.98

Checking account balances

Deacon:  $17,391.93

Education:  $12,610.10

Memorial:  $25,798.64

Resource:  $9,220.07

Operating:  $44,548.36

Carroll Miller reported the May operating deficit was $1,805. However, that includes income of $3,302 from completed Resource Projects. Office expenses include a $1,500 down payment on the church Wi-Fi update. We have also paid several invoices in getting the parsonage ready to rent.

The executor of the Shoemaker Estate has given us a final accounting of distributable assets. The share for Grace UCC will be $82,295.44. They are still waiting for state approval, but we should receive the money within 30 days. It must be used to improve lighting in the sanctuary.

Donald B. Smith checked the roof leak over the front of the sanctuary.  A louver was removed from a spire. There was solid concrete inside. A hose was used to help find the leak.  It was determined the flashing by the spires should be replaced with larger pieces. Smith gave an estimate of $3500 to do the repair. The current shingles on the sanctuary roof were put on in 1980.  There are also a few other small leaks starting in the sanctuary roof as shown by some stains in the plaster on the ceiling. After discussion, it was suggested Grace get quotes to replace the roof. Four companies will be contacted for quotes:  Donald B. Smith, Thomas in Westminster, Conewago Enterprises, and Cool Water in Spring Grove.

Pastor Whittier gave an update on the parsonage. The fireplace was inspected.  A repair will be needed. The flu cap will also be replaced. The parsonage was professionally cleaned at a cost of $600.  A video tour will be done to record the condition of the parsonage. There is no water shut off for the washer in the parsonage.  A few other plumbing problems will need to be done.

Pastor Whittier also reported she  will be on vacation June 19 through June 25. Members of Grace donated $945.00 to Gettysburg Association for Church World Service Bucket Cleanup Kits.

Patti Miller reported she made 24 visits during May, including nursing homes, rehab, and private residences.  Some members received more frequent or repeat visits based on individual circumstances such as declining health or prolonged rehabilitation. Everyone appreciates the weekly mailings from Grace and always ask about happenings at Grace.

Mike Tasto reported the new Wi-Fi has been installed at Grace. (page 8)

Sharing God’s Grace donations this year will go to Hanover Area Council of Churches.  The goal is $5000. The first offering will be in June. (page 6)

The Consistory discussed removing pews from the back half of the large transept. This was regarding Doris Whistler’s vision to use the back portion of the large transept as a gathering place before and after worship.  A presentation will be presented to the congregation.

Florists are being contacted for prices for altar flowers.  (page 8)

Due to Vacation Bible School the parlor will not be available the second Monday in July.   It was decided to have the next Consistory meeting Monday, July 29, and not have a meeting in August.

Resource Committee

Can you believe where we are already?  Where are the lazy days of summer? Feels like you have to run to catch them?  Take Time to feel the outdoors, listen to birds, see the flowers, see the stars … what a tonic nature truly is!

Well, back to business – we had 2 very successful trips – The Stirling Mansion had 53 passengers (here we earned $430.85) – then our latest one to Winterthur had 39 passengers and earned us $381.70.  (Postage for mailing is a very big part of the expenses.)

As far as future bus trips – one to Boston / Salem (oooooooooooooooo) between October 27th and 30th, no costumes necessary and a Christmas (Dec?) Whitehouse trip or the beautiful decorations.  Decisions will have to be made early here because they must have info to check you out in order to be part of the people coming.  I will start taking names in early July!

Thanks for all the Support!  If you feel you can help on the Resource Committee, please see me – Mary Jane Fuhrman – There are many jobs to make a successful project!

Peach Pies coming up – Can’t bake ?? you can come and peel peaches with us or make phone calls for orders – see how easy it is for you to join the fun and join the cause!!  Hope to hear from you soon!

Sharing God’s Grace

Do you go to bed every night with a roof over your head, after eating at least one hot meal that day?

The Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC) provides these two unique and important ministries 365 days a year.  The PAL (Provide A Lunch) and homeless shelter are the only ministries of their kind in Hanover. In addition, HACC provides 15 other crucial ministries including Meals on Wheels, Ruth’s Harvest (backpacks of food on weekends for school children during the school year), and a medical clinic.

Our project for 2019 is the HACC with a goal of $5,000.   The main collection will be the last Sunday of each month beginning in June.  You may bring your contribution to the front of the sanctuary during the last hymn.  Of course, contributions may be given at any time, using the envelopes in the pew or marking your contribution Sharing God’s grace.  In this way we are truly reaching out to Share God’s Grace with those around us.  If you have any questions, contact a member of the committee: Linda Bixler, Mary Jane Fuhrman, Cathy Reck, Marsha Theisson, or Ken Wenger.

Common Clues

One Person Prayer Group

Not a group does one make, and so we would like to increase our Prayer Group numbers.

The group formed a few years ago with three or four people showing up on a certain day at a particular time.  Over the years the group’s members have dwindled … down to one, who continues, using the prayer list as a guide, and faithfully praying – aloud in the sanctuary – every week.

(Wielding the spoken word in Prayer as a powerful tool in service to us, her family in Grace.)

Are you feeling the call to prayer?  Would you like to join the small, once a week, dedicated group?  It doesn’t take a lot of time and the rewards are many as you hear how prayer has helped!

Please contact the church office and make your wishes known.  We can call a gathering and decide when and what time is best – or – if interested, you could join me Tuesdays about 10am and we can go on from there!

Hope to see you soon!  Donna Bankert
