A Word from Pastor Bonnie…

Hello,

I have a sentence written on a post hanging in my office window that says, “How I long for a definitive answer.” Can you relate to this longing?  How I long to pray and have God’s voice come over the television with my answer.

It just doesn’t work that way.  First, God’s timing is just that—God’s.  Second, I am sure if the answers were so easily heard and understood, we would be tempted to take them for granted.  Third, maybe the answer is easily heard, and we dismiss the answer.

I have people tell me they want an answer right now; but often what they are saying is, “I need help with listening to God.”  Lent is a time to intentionally work on your relationship with God. It is a time to reflect and wonder and examine what is closest to our hearts.  Is God the closest or has someone or something taken God’s place? It can happen so quickly.

I see people of all ages glued to their phone.  I see it at the store, at fast food places, nice dining places and especially at home.  When did we become so obsessed with our telephone, the media, and/or technology? Is it any wonder we have lost sight of God?  I have been reflecting upon the difference between a drug or alcohol addiction and a phone addiction. No one wants to hear, or much less admit, that they are addicted to their telephone.  Yet, I wonder if the addiction is the same. The addiction takes you away from what is important in your life.

I invite you to think about the question, “What is important to your life?”  Spend some time during the next several weeks to think about the question.

Where is God in your life? What priority is God in your life?  Are you not hearing the voice of God because you are too far away to hear?

Blessings,

Pastor Bonnie

April 2019 Consistory Digest

There were 18 members present including Pastor Whittier, Patti Miller, and Greg Sindlinger.

Treasurer’s Report:

General pledge for February 2019:

$10,775.50 (4 Sundays)

General pledge for February 2018:  $11,962.00 (4 Sundays)

YTD 2019 income:  $30,036.97

YTD 2019 expenses:  $39,305.07

YTD shortage:  $9,268.10

Checking account balances:

Deacon:  $19,821.50

Education:  $12,609.82

Memorial:  $34,712.05

Resource:  $8,017.18

Operating:  $17,620.41

Carroll Miller reported February’s Treasurer’s Report shows a deficit of $5,460. Expenses included $1,882 for Parsonage Property Taxes, which are paid twice each year. Giving was slightly below last year but maintaining a reasonable level. At present we have $17,620 in the operating account. We will probably need to draw some money from Investments in three or four months.

Becky Boyer has joined the 2019 Consistory for her first three year term.

Patti Miller reported during February she made 22 visits, including nursing homes, rehab, private residences, and the hospital.  Some members received more frequent or repeat visits based on individual circumstances such as declining health or prolonged rehabilitation.

Michael Decker from E&B Transportation will provide Mandated Reporter training to Grace staff and children and youth volunteers, Saturday April 27, 2019, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in Fellowship Hall.

The Resource Committee reported there is a Tea planned for April 10, the April 16 bus trip is sold out, and a bus trip to the DuPont Mansion is scheduled for June 4.  The committee is working hard.

Pastor Bonnie reported we are ready to print a new directory—March 4 is the deadline to add your information before printing.  A telephone Prayer Chain is in place and almost ready to go as well. She called 12 people to be involved as callers, with Beverly Speight-Mohamed as the Number 1 contact person.  Pastor Bonnie also reported a new pictorial directory is being planned. We can take our own digital pictures and have a company put them together in a book. A second option, which would be more expensive, is to have a company such as Touchstone do the photography and book.

A Dickson temperature/humidity monitor was installed in the organ chamber March 6. Monthly readings will be taken for one year and reported to Harold Heller and the Trustees.

OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER

Can you offer a few hours to help clean and organize the church?

There are several areas where help is needed to sort through and organize materials.  If you have time during the day or evening to help, you will be helping create a welcoming, orderly environment at church. Also, what a great opportunity to work together with others!   If interested, please contact Elaine in the church office.

Aaron Welper is looking for volunteers to offer services to seniors.  If you have been thinking about helping others and are interested in donating your time and talent by way of doing yard work or washing windows etc., please contact Aaron @ (717) 752-5552.

Children and Youth Volunteers

Is Your Volunteer Clearance Out of Date?

Clearances for children and youth volunteers will soon expire for those people who had clearances done in 2014.  PA state law requires all clearances be done every 60 months. The bulletin board outside the nursery has a list of Grace Volunteers showing past clearance dates.  There is also information on the board showing how to renew clearances. A bulletin board in Fellowship Hall and on the top floor of the education wing contains the information as well.  Please contact Craig Bixler for more information.

Sharing God’s Grace

The committee has received some very exciting news from Donna Lentz of the Area Volunteer for Southeast Pennsylvania regarding our participation in Heifer International!  Because of our precious gift we are being offered special recognition and the committee is meeting to decide the best way to announce this honor to the congregation!

Keep watching for moooooooore details.

 Wow!

Linda Bixler and I want to have some fun and we want to share it with you!

We are inviting you to join us at 7:00 PM on April 1st for a “foolishly” fun evening!

We bring snacks and give you an opportunity to make a BEAUTIFUL, beautiful planter!!!!  You bring a gallon jug, or a large plastic bottle with some kind of handle.  (There will be an example in the office for you to see.) And we will help you transform that plain old jug into a beautiful planter.

Depending on how much fun we are having, this event could be over in an hour or 2 … the length of the time will be up to you!  Mark your calendars now to join us for a few hours of intense fun, laughter and food!

Just a hint – this involves eyes, nose, lips and a large variety of hair!!!  This is going to be so much fun!!!!

Sewing Group – April 9th

The sewing Group will once again be meeting on the second Tuesday of each month, September through June, to assemble bed pads. More hands are always welcome!

Resource Committee

We netted $640 on our pie sale with lots of complimentary comments which make it all so much more worthwhile.

Our bus trip will soon be fulfilled. Now, if you missed this one, which I understand happens, please be aware of our next one-day trip on June 4th. We will be touring the wonderful American treasure Winterthur; where the French immigrants – The du Ponts settled in the early 1800’s. Three generations of du Ponts lived here.

You will see the gorgeous 60-acre gardens. No, you won’t have to walk. We will be on a tram. Then the mansion with its marvelous collection of treasures, is available for us to see in their 175-room estate.

Now, off to Wilmington, Delaware for a fantastic lunch at the Wilmington Hotel. Excited yet? Call as soon as you can. More to come.

Please start collecting for the yard sale. Call if you need something transported. Call Mary Jane Fuhrman or Faye Myers. We’ll need help for set up at 6:30 AM and tear down at 2:00 PM.

Thank you to all who said “yes” to making goodies; desserts for our tea on April 10th at 1:00 PM.  They all sound yummy. Easter candy is being made, excellent taste and beautifully packaged, a great presentation for gift giving.

Fondly, Mary Jane

Sharing and Caring

Honor the Past /Step into the Future

Think about your favorite memories of Grace United Church of Christ.  Were you here during one of the renovations/new constructions? Maybe the day you walked into worship for the first time was touchingly special for you.

What is on your wish list for Grace United Church of Christ?  A little more rock and roll in the modern service? More lighting in the traditional service?  Maybe you would like to see more missionary trips.

Within the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing each other’s thoughts and dreams while caring about the feelings being expressed and those who have expressed them.  You will have the opportunity to share your thoughts!

March 31st:  we will honor & collect our memories of the past.

April 7th:   we will honor & collect our wishes for the future.

They will be made into a collage that will be hung in the church!
